Rap music has a bad reputation for guns & violence. Many rap artistes have become embroiled in black gun gangs. Seems Country Rapper, Colt Ford, is embroiled in a white gun gang, the NRA. Seems to go with the territory.

Interesting that a few British & European country acts are getting attention outside the country music fold. You mention The Shires on TV on Saturday & of course Ward Thomas, a country duo from Hampshire, are getting considerable attention. Added to that, Euro-Country from the Common Linnets charted as has another European Country music act, The First Aid Kit.

Yes all duos. In fact the first halve of 2014 is very much the year of the duo.
Striking Matches were the buzzworthy winners of the C2C festival and Jill And Kate were another that stepped forward.
There has also been some great tracks from Canadian and Aussie duos.

By the sound of things it looks like Ward Thomas are to follow The Shires onto that Weekend ITV show.
Really enjoyed seeing The Shires, I thought they looked and sounded great. Crissie has a beautiful face.
Its good that they have both got Radio 2 playlisted (Ward Thomas now for a second time on the "A" playlist), endorsed by Bob Harris and Terry Wogan.
UKCountryRadio.com now picking up on Ward Thomas along with CMR Nashville.
The Shires single "Nashville Grey Skies"did top iTunes UK Country chart but did not make the Top 100 singles. If that can't make it I'm not sure a Brit country act ever will. Maybe someone did in the 70's and 80s :?: Comments from people saying they streamed it lots of times on YouTube aren't much use to them. Why not actually buy it and hear the HI FI quality.
With very much traditional biased DJ's across Europe I don't think either act will have got far relying on them as they show little support for new young upcoming acts.

Just look at the International Chart Top 20 last published:
1. Johnny Cash 2. Erin Hay 3. Rodney Crowell 4. Ann Pascoe 5. Allen Karl 6. George Longard 7. Jack Blanchard Misty Morgan
8. JK Coltrain 9. Hermann L Meyer 10. Noel Parlane 11. Jim Reeves 12. Jim Owen 13. Carlene Carter 14. Donna Cunningham
15. Glenn Williams 16. Barry P Foley 17. Hank Williams 18. Mark Chesnutt 19. Hank Snow 20. Willie Nelson.

From the Hotdisc charts in Country Music People you will see recent No1s for:
Just Another Day In Paradise (Bertie Higgins 2 weeks) , "The Sweetest Thing" (Jamie O’Neal 3 weeks old Juice Newton cover song)
"You’re The Reason God Made Oklahoma" (David Frizzell & Shelly West 6 weeks)
Yesterday saw Jim Reeves come in at No2 with "Distant Drums", with DJ's who can't get enough 50 years after his death and Country Music People running full page adverts on the Jim Reeves Boxset.

Maverick Magazine latest have 2 page features on The Shires and Ward Thomas.
Country Music People mentioned the The Shires last month only for David Allen to be peeved off and having a cripe in Bob Harris' direction that Radio 2 haven't picked up on his favourite Will Banister.
David Allan Page
(Ref The Shires) ..the statement on the press and on national radio that this is “the first British Country act to be signed to a Nashville label. What an exciting groundbreaking way to usher in a new era in British country music. All well and good if it were true!
I was around in the late 70s when that terrific group from Lancashire, Poacher, was not only signed up by Nashville but also had a single Darlin’ on the Billboard charts.

Then this month
David Allan Page
Stuart Cameron who runs the Hotdisc service raises an interesting point, what would have happened he asks if the CMA & Beeb had put this kind of effort into British talent years ago? It is a tragedy that both did not invest in homegrown country music over the past decades and really sell the genre” Whilst I applaud the efforts to support The Shires it has come all too late for many of Britain’s most talented singers.Discuss!

I don't know what "talent" he is referring to exactly? I think My Darling Clemetine & The Toy Hearts might enter that frame.
Lucy Diamond looked to have a bright future and completely disappeared several years back. A few other acts gave up jobs personal relationships and headed to Nashville where their audience is such as Emma King & The Heartsets.
Probably David Allan isn't aware yet but in the January 2014 issue of Country Music People he shared his disappointment once again on his page as to why the media have seemingly ignored Mike Ward (From The Voice) who he likened to George Jones. Maybe all that is about to change as he was recording in a studio last week!

UK acts really have to be able to play their instruments live and not rely on others playing for them, which enables them to play anywhere. They should NOT just look to please country fans but general music fans. They need to write original material that has widespread commercial appeal to a 15- 50 audience.

The Common Linnets - Is certainly my album of the year so far its sold far more copies and is much more acceptable to UK music fans than Miranda Lambert's 4 week Radio 2 play listing and massive roll out for Platinum which debuted at No.52 (1,725 sales; built up in pre-order period) then fell off right off the chart a week later.
Listening to Bob Harris he played The Common Linnets last Thursday saying he ONLY had just picked up on them after hearing Steve Wright play "Storm After The Calm". I didn't watch Eurovision but picked up on the buzz the next day and immediately bought the single then the album came available shortly after and downloaded that.

I also thought David Allan harping on about The Shires getting all this attention, what about the acts back in the Seventies? rather pointless.
Whatever the merits of the acts he mentions, I ndon't see what their lack of attention then has to do with the Shires now.
I do think, though, that the guy in The Shires has dodgy hair!

That's like comparing apples and oranges. The UK country scene today is quite unlike that of decades ago. Back in the '70's and '80's British acts would go to Nashville, book a studio, make a record with top quality session men and then come back home and sell the record at gigs. A few (Poacher has been mentioned) actually got records released stateside and scored publishing contracts but almost none put in the long-time work needed to survive or even thrive in America.

This should not be thought of as laziness or short-sightedness on their part. It made sound economic sense to work this way because the UK domestic scene was so large that bands could work full time and make a good living out of it. The UK scene today is a fraction of what it was then. It's glory days are well and truly behind it. Nowadays bands and singers have to cast their net more widely and they have the internet to do it on, again, unlike performers of times past.
Country is a state of mind, not a state of America.
