Wichita Falls 2018

Postby kev » Mon Jan 29, 2018 3:38 pm

Back to Texas in June for the Legends of Western Swing festival in Wichita Falls. The line-up was finally (partly) announced over the weekend - Bobby Flores, Billy Mata and Texas Tradition, and the Dave Alexander Big Texas Swing Band. And I'll be excited to see Jason Roberts again, especially as he'll be featuring the legendary Leon Rausch (last of Bob Wills major vocalists) - he's 90 years old ... gotta hope he last till June!! And then there's Jake Hooker, Red Volkaert (that'll be interesting!!), and Coby Carter.

And the headliner for Saturday night is Tracy Byrd! Not someone I would generally consider western swing, though he's recorded a few swing songs, but he's a good ol' Texas boy and it'll be good to see him again.

Tracy Byrd is a good one, hope it's a great one for you.

And the final name to be added to the line-up is Mikki Daniel. Loved her last album, so that should be fun!

Managed to resurrect a couple of clips from last year's festival that I thought were lost! Jason Roberts and Jody Nix and "Faded Love".

Floyd Domino is a superb pianist who's played with many big names in Texas music and western swing - Asleep at the Wheel, Merle Haggard, Billy Mata, Cornell Hurd - but I've never seen him play live. But now I've heard he's going to be at Wichita Falls next week with Redd Volkeart. Excellent!!

Here he is last year with Billy Mata:

Oh well, that's another trip to Texas been and gone! Had a great time - good weather, adventures with burgers, and some truly wonderful music! And I got to meet with another member of the forum, Ameripolitan Fan, who had flown over from Croatia!

Musically, it was an amazing few day ... such a great variety of excellent musicians, including a couple of surprises. I was most delighted to meet the legendary Leon Rausch and to hear him sing. And he does a great job for a 90 year old!!

More importantly, did you sit on a Cracker Barrel rocking chair...............?

I did actually visit a Cracker Barrel (looking for their 'exclusive' version of the new Willie Nelson CD ... which they had never heard of!! ) but didn't sit on a rocking chair. Next time ....
