11130 users ??????
this can't be right surely?

I know theres an afull lot of bogus users on here and some folk who sign up pureply just to have the same access rites as regular users and contributors but can't you jsut go in once a month to delete off the rubbish ? I thought you had to confirm membership or something? and dose it not effect the space taken up by the forum files/speed or whatever?

Hi Nicky,

I might be wrong but.....

Anyone who is viewing the site is classed as a user. To use the site and post you must be registered (and confirm identity and all that gubbins). So, anyone just reading the page will be classed as a user, including all teh BOTS (automated programs) that are running round the web looking for things to post and advertise (usually porn and other such rubbish). You remember a while back we had an infestation of thses sorts of things ? Well, they were bots randomly posting on teh forum. Now they can't get in automatically so they can't post but it doesn't stop them trying. If you look at the who's online bit you'll see there are regulalry 'things' viewing and posting (or attempting to) but they can't get at the forum since John did his magical trickery bit.

Nasty place this internet.....

you'll have to ask John how it works but it is a big site, not only the Forum so perhaps you have to take everything into account.

There are 9 guests on now as well as myself.

Nicky your just too trechnical for me lovie

yes Dixie I know we're all "users" but not all members - it's the members I'm on about. you don't have to sign up to view the site only to contribute to it and then yes you have to confirm your ID to be able to post...but... it's the bots I think need clearing out.

If I had to sign in just to read the postings - I think I would give it a miss.

I'm not saying that at all Val. I've nowt against guest popping in or not signing in.
It was jsut an observation that these spammers and bots have made actual accounts numbering some 20+ a day almost and surely those accounts must be clogging up the system. It's a bit like getting spam in your e-mail in box that you have to clear out all the time.

The site is unbarably slow so I do agree with u. There are hundreds of members who never post and live in Timbuck Two.
Just been on the Ranch and raced thru with no problems - all members seem genuine.
Of course it could be the extreme weather on here so lets hope the snow stops soon.

NickyJo quote:

This is right Nicky.
There are now 12316 registered users.
This means that 12316 people have registered.
You are right that there is an extra process to complete to become registered. This is to stop the people who write programs and then spider the web and register on all the forums that they can find. The next process is then to flood the forums with SPAM etc.
You may remember some time ago we had 50 - 100 spam postings a day that had to be deleted. This was a daunting task, as you can imagine.
This is when all registrations had to be authorised by an administrator. And since Phil has moved on it was down to me to check every single registration. This took around 1 to 2 hours per day.
I then decided to add an extra registration process.
The reason for this is that robots don't know about it so any registration that completes the second process had to be human.
I must tell you that it cut my work down by 95% at least.

Now to address the speed of the server. It really doesn't matter how many registered users are registered, it doesn't affect the speed of the server.
If I had to go into the database and delete the registered users that are not active it would take a lot of time. I have concluded that I might as well leave them there as they are doing no harm.

The server may run rather slow at times.
There are many possible reasons for this. Most of them are outside my control.
What is in my control is the speed of the computer, Since the site was first develloped some 10 years ago, I have changed to an upgraded computer 6 times. This in itself is a major job.
The current server is a Pentium 4 with a 1.8Ghz Intel 4 processor and 2Gb of RAM.
Since this is basically a free site the bulk of the cost is borne by me. To upgrade again would cost me a few hundred pounds.

I hope this explains some of the questions that people have.

Hi john
I didn't really have a problem with it running all that slow I was jsut concerned about any extra file space etc they may be taking up - but if it's no problem it don't bother me none :)

There is another possible cause of the site running slow.
That is that the forum is part of the British Country Music site, http://countrymusic.org.uk .

Also http://bcmi-radio.co.uk is hosted on the same server since it is country music related.

A lot of people go straight to the forum and don't bother with the main site.

If you check the main site and scroll down to the bottom of the page you can see how many hits the site has had since the 1st January 2008.
As of todays date the total hit count is 1,495,551
