Exciting country news from Radio 2!

Country is the musical jewel in the Radio 2 crown this November.

To mark the biggest night in the country music calendar, the 47th annual Country Music Association Awards, Radio 2 is live from Nashville and presents a week of related programming including Bob Harris specials plus documentaries that delve deeper into the stories behind the music:

• In a three hour show, Patrick Kielty is live from Nashville previewing the CMAs in a star-studded show of celebrity guests and live music. He also goes out and about in Nashville to discover the food, fashion and fame of America’s Music City (Wednesday 6 November, 2pm).

• Bob Harris gives his round-up of the awards in a show which will also feature his interviews with the artists backstage (Saturday 9 November, 6pm). A Bob Harris Country special showcases two multi-CMA award winning artists, Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum, featuring highlights from two concerts recorded for Radio 2 in 2011 (Thursday 7 November, 7pm). He also presents highlights from the inaugural C2C: Country to Country festival which took place at the O2 Arena earlier this year (Thursday 7 November, 10pm).

• Cerys Matthews makes a personal pilgrimage back to Nashville, where she lived for some years, to examine the country music industry from a woman's perspective in her two-part documentary, Cerys and the Women of Country (Monday 4 & 11 November, 10pm, produced by Falling Tree Productions).

• And almost 50 years after his tragic death in a plane crash at the age of just 40, Sir Terry Wogan explores the life of a country legend in Welcome To My World: The Jim Reeves Story which marks the life and career of the man who brought 'country' to the masses with hits such as I Love You Because and Distant Drums (Tuesday 5 November, 10pm, produced by Made In Manchester Productions).

Bob Shennan, Controller, BBC Radio 2, is on the board of the Country Music Association. He said: “Radio 2’s week of programming puts country music centre stage and is a great opportunity to celebrate Nashville’s finest with country music’s legions of fans across the UK. It is the centrepiece of a rich and varied offering of music and documentaries on Radio 2 this autumn which feature much-loved artists and presenters.”

Patrick Kielty? How does he relate to country music? Seems to be the normal response from radio 2 - send a minor celebrity!

It does seem an odd choice. Still, it will be a three hour show, & there will a[patently be some 'live' music performances on it.
Odd that with all this buildup to the CMA Awards, the beeb are not covering the actual event its=-self. But Bub will be doing a roundup of the awards on the Saturday after.

Patrick Kielty? He's got Terry Wogan's old DJ slot. Seems to be the normal response from radio 2 - put in an Irish celebrity!

I don't mind the Beeb using non-specialist presenters to cover the CMA. DJ's core skill is being chatty, even when they know nothing about a subject. Although being Irish, I expect he does know something about CM. But if he doesn't, he'll rely on the script Mark Hagen provides for him. And without the genuflecting of Bob Harris.
Country is a state of mind, not a state of America.

I used to enjoy the live overnight broadcasts on Radio 2 from the CMA Awards. Bob Harris & Nick Barrowclough made a good, knowledgeable team, & their guests were interesting, too. I recall on a couple of occasions either Bob or Nick was teamed with some Nashville person for presentation duties.
At least Bob is doing the roundup the following Saturday on Radio 2. Better than Dale- he just kept going on about fashions!!

Not sure where the "live" performances will be coming from - it'll be 8 in the morning in Nashville!

I suspect they'll be giving the musos an early morning wake up call! The show is on for 3 hours, so it will be about 11 there when it finishes.
Also, singers & musos CAN get up early- they often do to guest on Coffee, Cody & Country!
