Radio Career
My first dealings with radio were way back in August 1976 when I was seconded from my teaching job in education to produce a 6 part programme (15 minutes each) on song writing. At the time very little had been done on British songwriters.

I became hooked on presentation and put forward a proposal to BBC Radio Leicester to have a weekly half hour country music programme. This was readily accepted and both Peter Hook and myself presented the programme from September 1977 through to 1989. It had many name changes starting with 188 Moonshine Special, 189 Moonshine Special and finally to Country Style 358. As you can see the station’s frequency kept changing.

From 1981 until 1987 I was also working with Colin Kettle at BBC Radio Lincolnshire with a 1 hour country programme which was broadcast on Saturdays. The ratings were high and it was soon extended to a two hour programme.

On January 1st 1988 I took over the country show on BBC Radio Nottingham where I have been up to the present day.

The three programmes plus BBC Radio Derby were all combined together in 1989 to form BBC in the East Midlands and I was fortunate enough to land the presentation job and now present a 2 hour weekly programme called ‘Mick Smith’s Country’
